Day 24-It's Hard

I'm recycling another quote that I've used in the past. This time I'm giving you the video clip to go with it, like I did yesterday with Alice in Wonderland.

I think it makes a bigger impact with the video.

Here's the quote:
"It just got too hard"
"It's supposed to be hard. If it were easy everyone would do it. The "hard" is what makes it great."

James 1:2 “Count it all joy, my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (ESV)

Day 23-Impossible?

Today I'm using a quote that I've posted before.

It's from the movie Alice in Wonderland. The most recent version by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp.

Ok, yes Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp have high jacked this blog. Sorry, I can't help it if they have both been in some pretty good movies.

Here is the quote:

"This is impossible" -Alice

"Only if you believe it is"-Mad Hatter

Luke 1:37 “For nothing will be impossible with God." (NASB)

I have found a video clip and the quote is actually spoken right at the beginning. This is a video that has various clips from the movie put together. It is worth watching to the end.

I think it goes along with the quote and the scripture quite nicely.

I hope you agree.

Day 22-Planting Seeds

The quote I have for you today is from the sci-fi action thriller movie Inception.

As always, if you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it. It's a little difficult to follow but it is well worth it. And of course it doesn't hurt that Leonardo DiCaprio is the star.

Some of you may be sensing a theme. This is the third movie I've featured with Leo.

Strictly coincidence. I promise.

  Here is the quote:

"The seed that we planted in this man's mind may change everything"

In the parable of the seeds and soil, Jesus spoke of how seeds fall in many different types of soil.  For some, the seed is not received.  For others, the seed is received but as it grows it is choked out by the worries and problems of the world around them.  And still for others it grows very quickly, but the roots are in shallow soil and as soon as there is too much heat, it withers and dies.  But Matthew 13:23 says

And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. (NASB)

Every day, all day, everything we do is an opportunity to plant seeds. Our part is really easy. We are not responsible for whether or not they accept what we tell them.  It is not our job to force them to change, or brow beat them into acceptance. We are only to be who we are in Jesus; plant the seed; give them the information.  .

Maybe you’ve asked them to church a million times, or forgiven someone over and over.  You may have been laughed at for your choices, or not invited because of your beliefs.

It doesn’t matter.

They are all seeds.

God can take that tiny idea and allow it to grow into something more.

And when it grows it can be life changing.

Day 21-Buckle Up with Jesus

We are in the home stretch with our Blockbuster Inspiration journey.  If you have been stopping by everyday, a "big thank you" to you from me.

Don't forget to post a comment on each post everyday to be entered to win a movie gift basket. I'll be posting a picture later this week to entice you a little more.  You can get an additional entry into the drawing by leaving a comment on the Blockbuster Inspiration Facebook page also.

For today's quote I'm going waaay back to the black and white era.  This line comes from the movie All About Eve starring Bette Davis.

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night"

Now I'll admit that I've never seen this movie.
But the line is iconic. I don't think you need to see the movie to get the connection for this one.

Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

A seatbelt is something that is strapped across a person’s body to keep that person safe and secured.  Its purpose is to save our life in the event of a car crash, or at the least keep the injuries to a minimum.

Yes, our ride in this life is definitely bumpy.
Things happen every day that can hurt us, or knock us around.
Just as it would be foolish to ride in a car without our seatbelt fastened, it would also be foolish to try to make our way without Jesus.

Day 20-Shimmer,Glow,Let Your Light Shine

Today's clip is from the movie "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"
It's a pretty old movie starring a very young Johnny Depp and an even younger newcomer at the time, Leonardo DiCaprio.

It's the story of a young man who is struggling to do the right thing caring for is overweight mother and disabled brother, along with two sisters while trying to live his life.

If you get a chance to see this movie I would recommend it, but it is not for children.
Leonardo gives a performance that is so convincing that I believed he was a disabled young man when I first saw it.

And of course, I've always been a fan of Johnny Depp.

Here's the quote:

Momma: You're my knight in shimmering armor. Did you know that?
Gilbert: I think you mean shining.
Momma: No shimmering. You shimmer, and you glow.

Although Gilbert feels as though he is failing in each of his roles as son, brother, and breadwinner for the family, his mother puts his mind at ease with just this one line.

The goodness that Gilbert felt he was lacking shows in all he does for his family. His mother can see, it and so can others he comes in contact with.

Matthew 5:16 (NASB) Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven

Day 19-We Can't Handle the Truth

This speech is iconic, one of the most widely know movie speeches of all times. The line "you can't handle the truth" is quote millions of times a day by people. Usually jokingly.

Now, before you watch this video, I must warn you that at the very end, Colonial Jessup (Jack Nickolson) uses a phrase that is offensive to Christians. You don't have to listen that far, or watch even.
But I think what he says just proves the point I'm about to make.

"You can't handle the truth."

1 John 1:8 (NASB) If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Colonial Jessup makes a very valid point in this speech. Most people... most of us... can't handle the truth, or even want to know the truth about ourselves or about others.

We would sometimes just rather go along blindly believing that everything is ok.

Sure there are problems in the world, we are all well aware of that, but with ourselves specifically?

Not so much.  We do ok. We don't murder, we don't steal, we give to charity, we go to church, we raise our kids to believe.

Truth is, the Bible says there isn't one of us that is truly good. Not one.

Jesus was the only one who walked this earth who was absolutely good and perfect in every way for his entire 33 years he lived.

We cannot measure up to that. Not ever.

So while we like to believe like Col. Jessup says, that we don't agree with what he does, or how he does it, truth is most of us would feel a little safer with someone like him guarding the walls in Cuba.

Tom Cruise's character says he wants the truth, but does he really?

Truth is, the truth is painful, uncomfortable and a little too revealing for people.

I have sinned in ways that would cause my friends to turn their backs on me if they knew.

I have known people guilty of appalling sins.

It's not something I talk openly about when I get together with friends over a cup of coffee.

Shocking. I know.

But as good Jack reminds us, sin is there...in all of our lives....it exists on a daily basis and most of us are unwilling to admit we know of it, or have committed it. We would rather turn a blind eye and enjoy our blissful ignorance and sometimes even enjoy the result of that sinful behavior regardless of how it happened.

So yes, Jack Nickolson takes the Lord's name in vain at the end of this speech, but really are we surprised? His character ordered the torture of a fellow marine under the guise of it being better for the unit as a whole. He defends his choice as being the right thing to do, even if it turned tragic.

If you look at Tom's face at the end of the speech, you can see it, just for a brief moment. He knows Jack is right. While his job was to get Col. Jessup to admit the truth, once it's out there is has made him uncomfortable. Why?

Because he knows deep down in those places we don't talk about at parties.....

He knows he's right.

Day 18-What Goes Around

Welcome to Day 18

This quote comes from the movie Young Guns, starring Emilo Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, and Lou Diamond Phillips.

It's the somewhat story of Billy the Kid. I say somewhat because I'm not sure how much of the movie is based on fact and how much is made up and right now with this cold I'm fighting, I'm in no mood to find out.

Here's the line.

"Reap the whirlwind Brady, Reap it."

A good portion of this movie is spent on revenge.

And while it may seem like a good idea, and it plays out really well on screen, and it's really fun to watch this group of guys playing cowboys while they are acting out their revenge...

It isn't how we should live.

Romans 12:19 (NASB) Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord

It is not our job to take care of people who do wrong, that is for God to decide and for God to handle.

BUT

The Bible also says this.

Galatians 6:7 (NASB) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap

You see?
We don't have to worry about it.

God says, not only will He take care of it, but people reap what they sow and eventually their bad deeds will return to them.

So next time someone hurts you or breaks the rules, keep the gun in it's holster and let God handle it.
