Day 2-Gatsby

Day 2 of

Our quote for today comes from the most recent version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald book "The Great Gatsby".

If there’s anything that you want old sport, just ask for it—The Great Gatsby

When I heard they were making this book into a movie with Leo DiCaprio playing Jay Gatsby, I'll admit I was very excited.  I've been a fan of Leo ever since I saw him in the movie "What's eating Gilbert Grape"

Oh, but I'm getting off topic.

The quote is what's important here, not so much who said it.
Jay Gatsby is a man of wealth and means and he doesn't shy away from flaunting it as much as possible. When he says this line he means it. He doesn't want any of his guests to be unhappy, or speak ill of his hospitality.
The problem with this attitude is that it is all about impressing people. He wants to keep the people around him happy because he is hoping that they will like him. He's basically trying to buy people's friendship.
Well, we all know how that turns out.

Here is what the Bible says.
John 16:23 (NASB) In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you

The difference between Jesus and Gatsby (among other things) is the motive.
Jesus gives out of love for us. Gatsby gives for selfish gain.
Plain and simple.

Jesus says ask and it will be given. Whatever He gives, He gives freely. What we give Him in return should be given just as freely, Not because of what He gives us. But because we want to honor His gift in a manner that is worthy of Him.

Our attitude should be one of gratitude and appreciation not selfishness and greed.

Gatsby's so called friends just came back for more over and over again without any thought of him at all.. It was all about what he was giving them. In the end no one truly cared about him at all.

The entire movie is a good example of how motive can affect our choices and in turn the consequences of those choices.

Ahh, but I'd still watch just to see a little Leo in action.

Thanks for stopping by and I pray this little movie tidbit encourages you today.
