Big boat, little boat it doesn't matter.

It's that time of year again!!!
Shark Week.
In honor of this week I think this is the perfect movie to showcase.

***Note: this movie is the reason I don't swim in the ocean***

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”-Roy Scheider as Martin Brody

The small New England town of Amity is being terrorized by a gigantic great white shark. After several shark attack deaths leave the town facing the loss of tourism dollars, sheriff Martin Brody, along with a marine scientist and a salty old fisherman venture out in an attempt to rid the waters of “Jaws”.

Once out at sea, Brody, being the least experienced of the three, is given the job of baiting the water as a way of drawing the shark to them. Leaning on the rail of the boat, Brody starts to shovel fish parts into the water.

Within minutes Jaws makes his appearance.

Rising up out of the water, mouth open, teeth exposed, swallowing the bait whole.

For the first time, Brody gets a look at what they are up against. Frightened by what he sees, knowing they were using a small battered fishing boat, he backs away from the rail and says this quote.

Take a look at the clip.

How often have you felt like Martin Brody?

You see the magnitude of the task at hand, and immediately back away with the thought
“I’m just not enough.”
“I don’t have what it takes to do this.”

Just like Martin Brody, we think our “boat” is too small; the shark is too big.

However, the Bible says, Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (NASB)

Every situation or task we need to accomplish, each opportunity presented to us, has been placed there by God. And if God has placed it before us and has directed us to go forward, then we can be assured that our boat is just the right size to get us where He wants.

God created us, this world, and all that is in it. He plans our life from before we were born.

God knows what we are capable of and therefore the task at hand is just right for our abilities.  He has fully equipped us for this work.

Dingy, row boat, yacht or cruise ship.
No matter how big the shark, if we put our trust in Him, our “boat” is always going to be just the right size.

In what areas are you doubting your capabilities today? Are you able to trust fully in God to give you all that you need to move forward? If not, how can you change your thinking about this?

In thinking about this in light of our study of Gideon, He will usually ask us to go in the smaller boat so He gets the glory and we know we can't do it on our own.
